Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Education & Science Department, seeks a Science Manager to assist in animal welfare initiatives. The successful candidate will have conducted animal welfare research in a non-wild setting and will be familiar with issues related to the science of animal welfare. The successful candidate will report to the Animal Welfare Science Manager, within the Education and Science Team, and will contribute to animal welfare projects and initiatives, which may include developing and implementing animal welfare monitoring programs, measuring and evaluating the sensory environments of animals, conducting literature and web-based research on issues related to animal welfare, contributing to the advancement of animal welfare science and practice, teaching classes and giving presentations on animal welfare or other topics, and engaging park guests about our animal science programs.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage projects related to the current animal welfare monitoring program, and future iterations of welfare monitoring of collection animals, in coordination with science, veterinary and animal care staff.
  • Oversee and manage projects related to the sensory environments of animals, including but not limited to sound, light and ground vibration. Measure and interpret environmental data, and where necessary mitigate and manipulate sensory environments for animals to ensure positive welfare.
  • Explore and provide knowledgeable input on issues related to animal welfare in a variety of settings, such as collection animals in zoos and aquariums, agricultural animals, domestics, and animals in entertainment.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and give presentations at conferences.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience conducting behavioral and welfare research on animals in a non-wild setting
  • Experience and familiarity with the science (theory and practice) of animal welfare
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for both formal and informal audiences
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work with multiple teams and individuals in a fast-paced and professional atmosphere

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a zoo or aquarium
  • Record of publications on animal behavior and animal welfare
  • Experience with measurement and interpretation of environmental data (sound, light, vibration)
  • Experience with GIS software
  • Knowledge of statistics

Required Education

  • Masters degree in biology, zoology or related field
