Job Summary:

The Security team is made up of multiple units, but there is one that requires a high level of dedication and stands out – on four feet! The Canine Handler role is a very specialized position which requires a high level of commitment to the mission of the Security Division, as well as the commitment for the compassion and reliable care of the canine partner.

The pay rate for this role in Florida is $30.00 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with a company-assigned canine partner to inspect crowds, personnel, cargo, vehicles, and buildings in a variety of working environments, including indoor and outdoor venues.
  • Clearly communicate with multiple lines of internal business partners as well as external partners or agencies.
  • Report and document incidents in computer-based reports.
  • Complete intensive K9 detection training courses, maintain multiple annual certifications with canine partners, and pass canine/handler team certification every twelve months.
  • Display critical thinking skills, sound decision-making, risk-based security judgments, and the highest integrity and professionalism at all times.
  • De-escalate Guest and Cast contentious situations, respond quickly to medical incidents, and assist other emergency response needs.
  • Consistently model conflict resolution skills while balancing the importance of providing excellent Guest Service.
  • Work independently with limited direct supervision and make sound judgment(s).
  • Operate a customized Security vehicle for property surveillance and are responsible for maintaining the K9 Unit vehicles.
  • Be attentive to the K9 partners at all times. Observe and regularly update leaders regarding the health and welfare of the canine partner for signs of illnesses, injuries, behavior, physical activities, and habits.
  • Safely manage and maintain the canine partner and provide care such as bathing, feeding, and cleaning after the canine to include canine waste; also maintain the upkeep and cleaning of kennels which includes handling cleaning chemicals and supplies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license
  • Proficient with Microsoft Windows and mobile electronic devices
  • Two (2) years of experience in positions of growing responsibility within security, military police, law enforcement, or related investigations field; Security canine handling experience accepted
  • Must meet the scheduling needs of the K9 Unit team, knowing that Walt Disney World operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; Schedules and start times are subject to vary several times each week
  • Must be flexible with work schedule, including working extra hours, weekends, special events, and holidays
  • Must successfully complete the two (2) week Security Academy and be able to obtain a Class D security license
  • Physical role requires walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, kneeling, as well as heavy lifting up to 90 lbs. when handling canine partner
  • K9 team assignments are primarily outdoor locations that have high rates of exposure to weather elements
  • Canine Handler is a costumed hourly role

Preferred Qualifications:

Here are the outstanding preferred skills we are looking for:
  • Prior Security, Law Enforcement and/or Military Canine Handling background within the past five (5) years
  • Prior experience with Law enforcement, Military or Security Narcotic and/or Explosive Detection Canine Handling within the past five (5) years
  • Command of Area Search techniques
  • Knowledge of Walt Disney World property and resources
  • Previous courtroom and testimony experience
  • Verifiable recent direct experience working canine care at a shelter or animal facility
  • Associate degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management or Security-related field
  • Demonstrated high level of dependability/reliability/integrity/character
